About the Event
(Two performances: 6:00 & 8:00 pm) Commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation of America, Poulenc's Gloria sets mass texts to music of an unmistakable freshness and vivacity. Of the Gloria, Poulenc said that ‘...while writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues, and also some solemn-looking Benedictine monks that I saw playing football one day.’ Fittingly, his Gloria is a brilliant and captivating setting of the mass texts, expressed both with solemnity and mischievous exuberance.
